Mortal Kombat 2 ... with a twist

I hate Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, what an awful excuse for a film! I can't manage to watch the whole thing because it sucks so badly. But Reefer Badness #6 came to my attention and I decided to try watch it and see if the commentary would make this watchable. And you know what??? It does! For the first time, I am actually having fun watching this turd of a film, thanks to the awesome Reefer Badness. This film is so bad, it is bad, but now with the twist of commentary it is so bad it is good. Nice work guys, and awesome to see the sound quality is excellent!

David Cronenberg's new project

If you hadn't already guessed, I am a huge David Cronenberg fan, I love his films. I have just read via The Hollywood Reporter that David Cronenberg's next gig is the film adaption of the novel 'Cosmopolis' by Don DeLillo. Alfama Films and Toronto Antenna will co-produce the film, and it has not yet been cast.

Having a quick read up about the novel, it sounds like it has some potential and I am curious as to what Cronenberg will bring to the table with it. You can get a quick run down at Wiki, this one is certainly going to be on my radar.

I actually can't decide on what Cronenberg film I would call my favourite, I am leaning towards Videodrome.

Some trailers which have debuted at SDCC

Well it is that time of year again with the San Diego Comic Con in full force. Some really cool news has come out so far and you can certainly check all that out by heading to some awesome film sites: /Film, JoBlo, Bloody-Disgusting, CHUD, Fangoria and WorstPreviews just to name a few. Anyway, I have come across some trailers which have debuted at the Con, and I wanted to share them here.

First is the S4 trailer for Dexter!! And WOW!! Do not process if you have not seen all three seasons, but if you have...what the hell are you waiting for?

Secondly, one film I haven't been excited about in the slightest is the Tron sequel. But I am seriously pumped for this now!!! Check out this amazing trailer and tell me you aren't excited!

Thirdly is the trailer for The Book Of Eli, I've been hearing about it and it stars of one my favourite actors, Gary Oldman. Now I am super pumped for this, just wow! Bring it!

Drag Me To Hell

I have been looking forward to this all year it seems, Sam Raimi back in the Directors seat for a horror film! The trailer looked great, and the more that came out about it, the more excited I was to see it. The reviews had been mostly positive, and it came highly recommended.

Basic plot, a loan officer named Christine (Lohman) makes the tough decision to evict a woman out of her home, in the hopes making the tough decision will land her a promotion. This doesn't sit well with the woman who puts a curse on Christine. Well with a title like 'Drag Me To Hell' I think you can guess where this one is headed!

The film starts off with a bang, we get to see a little about this curse that is going to be put upon Christine, the opening certainly got my attention from the get go, and it was fun to watch. The film then introduced us to Christine, and quickly shows us a bit of who she is, what she is doing and what her motivations are. As soon as the woman (Lorna Raver) shows up, no more quiet life, things do literally go to hell for Christine!

The scenes that follow are great, they are over the top, but that is what makes them so much fun. You know things are going to happen, and the suspense builds up, the entire cinema was giggling with nervous laughter. Raimi knows his stuff, and this is certainly a throw back to Evil Dead 2, it felt like it's cousin actually. The build up, the dark and quirky humour, the use of sound, it all works so well. Like with Ash, he really puts Christine through a hellish ride. The audience ate this all up, I haven't seen many films where the crowd was so vocal and so into the film, it really was such a great atmosphere to be a part of with watching this film. I have to say, I had no idea how this would end, or what direction it would take. The scenes with the seer were actually quite well done, as well as the dinner from hell involving Christine meeting her boyfriend's (Justin Long) parents.

The final part of the film was so much fun, it was over the top, it was gross, it was a great time. I can't say enough about it really, it all just worked and meshed well. I think there was a bit in the film that was predictable but how it actually ended was not. The acting side of things, it was more on then off, Allison Lohman was a good choice. She delivered all the right notes, her character was on and off as far as liking her was concerned, there were just a few annoyances I had. Justin Long was alright, he had the appeal, and he worked. Too bad his dialogue was pretty poor. Lorna Raver was just insane as Sylvia, what a role! She stole the show quite easily.

Do yourself a favour and get dragged to hell! I want to have an Evil Dead marathon after seeing this one!

Writing and thank you

I blogged a few weeks back I had been writing, it is slowly getting there. I have another project in the works and I'd love to get feedback when I complete my first draft. If anyone is willing to have a look see, that'd be appreciated.

Hope you all are enjoying the podcasts, they are fun. The sound will improve, I think I have worked out the kinks. I recorded a preview podcast with Beth for the RHS & CHemme, and that worked well. I worked out why I sounded really low when Steven and I podcasted. I am hoping do to another podcast before the weekend or at the latest early next week, with another guest.

I want to catch Drag Me To Hell this week, if I see it expect a review next week or so.

I was expecting a phone call today, but I didn't get one, very disappointed about it.

I want to thank everyone for checking out the blog, listening to the podcasts, giving me feedback and spreading the word. I appreciate it soo much! You can subscribe to the podcast via iTunes, it should be searchable in the store within the next 48 hours. Here is the link

I had seen the trailer to this and I was blown away (check it out below), I thought it looked pretty awesome and it stars Tom Hardy (Star Trek: Nemesis).

It is about a real man named Michael Peterson aka Bronson, who is Britians most notorious prisoner. I knew pretty much nothing about the man, and after the film he still seems like a mystery. The film starts off with Bronson narrating to an audience, both with humour and horror. We then see his life un fold and it goes back and forth between the narration to the audience. I quite liked how they did this, it made for a more interesting film actually. It follows Bronson through his time in prison, getting moved to a mental institution, going free and then spending over 25 years in solitary.

This really is a one man show and worth seeing for Tom Hardys amazing performance. If you ever doubted this man as an actor, this will set you straight. He brings everything to this role, he looks the part (just look up the real Bronson) and he loses himself in the role. It takes a brave person to tackle a role like this and a strong one to pull it off. Tom does this all, and then some. I believe he did meet the real Bronson which probably helped him with his portrayal. I hope to see more from Hardy, what a fantastic actor.

The visuals in this film were nicely done, it had such a raw feel to it. It worked, and for each scene specific colours were used and highlighted, very much appreciated here. The direction by Nicolas Winding Refn was very solid, he got top performances. I think what brings this film down is there is a bit too much style and not enough substance. It is a unique film, I haven't seen anything like it. If you want an idea of what to expect, I might say it is a cross between A Clockwork Orange and Chopper. I think I wanted a bit more from the film, more of a point. But overal I enjoyed the film, and I was blown away with Tom Hardy.

Hostel II

I finally watched Hostel II, I enjoyed it for the most part. The second half had a few WTF moments, and some nice plot twists I actually didn't see coming. It wasn't as gorey as the first I felt though, and it wasn't as disturbing either. The characters in the first I didn't want to see them get it, but these girls were kind of annoying and I didn't give a shit. The blood bath scene I laughed (should I have?) it was just so silly. I can't believe Heather went nude and Bijou did not, very weird indeed! I did like the idea of seeing the kinds of people who pay for the service of being able to kill someone, and where it went was good too. Not as good as the first, but still good.

Storyline wise it was pretty much the same deal as the first, as I mentioned you also see the other side with the clients. There are a few twists here and there, and I had a feeling about one twist. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it. I think Eli Roth wanted to try and make a better film here, but for me it didn't quite get there but I appreciate all his hard work. The film is more polished and the set pieces are much better but it was more grittier in the first. I think it compliments the first, and does a decent job of continuing the story. Not sure I liked the small part with Paxton, I either would have liked it to have gone down differently or be left out completely. I thought performance wise they all did good jobs, they were all credible. Watch out for a cameo by Ruggero Deodato (Director of Cannibal Holocaust), I actually laughed really hard at this scene, very sick but also very fitting. Films like this which put the characters in a seeming no win situation makes you think. How would I react in that situation? How would I feel? How far would I go to survive? I can't imagine how horrible it would be to be in the situation those girls were in, and it scares me to think about. I think Eli Roth is awfully succussful in doing that, with Cabin Fever and Hostel I. Nice work!

Eli Roth has directed three films, all horror and I have liked and enjoyed them all. He always brings the goods and I do believe he will only get better. The man loves film, and he brings that into his work. If you want to see more, check out the fake trailer for Thanksgiving which was part of Grindhouse (He wants to turn it into a full length feature would be awesome) or have a look at his trailer commentaries at TrailersFromHell.

I wanna do bad things with you....

I have just finished watching S1 of True Blood, took me awhile to start watching it. I got the DVD last weekend highly discounted too I might add!

I had heard mixed things about it, more good then bad, and I like vampires (Twilight is not vampies urgh), I like Alan Ball (Six Feet Under is one of the best TV shows ever), so there was nothing stopping me from watching it. I have to say the pilot actually really got me into it, it was quirky, dark, funny, sexy, I enjoyed it. It introduced some interesting (and hot) characters, and I wanted to take the ride with them. Vampires have "come out of the coffin" so to speak and are like the new minority group fighting for their rights. Vampire mythos again is different here and it works so damn well.

There are several love stories with the main one being between Sookie and Bill (the vampire) and believe me these two have awesome chemistry (Anna and Stephen are a real life couple) and its amazing to watch. It blows Twilight out of the water, those two leads had no chemistry, it was such rubbish to watch, bleh.

Forget Twi-shit, watch True Blood and have some fun! There are different storylines going, a main murder mystery plot, for me it was always really engaging. I wasn't bored, and I wanted it to keep going.

Bring on Season 2!

PS: This has one of the most awesome theme songs and credit sequence.

My poor little dogphew (That is what I call my sisters dog, as I am his aunt hehe) Carlos is unwell. We took him to the Vet while his parents are working, poor thing seems to have a gastro bug. Not sure how he got it, poor thing hasn't really eaten for 2 days. Hopefully we can pick him up soon, and he starts to improve. Its been a drama day, but hopefully Carlos will get well really soon. Its usually my little one Toby who has the dramas with his illness, but today poor Carlos is ill.

Let The Right One In

I have been wanting to see this for quite some time, I finally got my shit together and sat down and watched it. I was highly disappointed with Twilight, and a friend of mine had told me that this would wipe away Twilight from memory, and you know what, IT DID! Twi-what???

It is no secret I am a fan of vampires, I have seen my share of vampire flicks (Near Dark possibly being my favourite). There is a strange appeal about vampires, the creatures of the night who must feed on blood to survive. They are immortal, they do not age, and depending on which mythology you follow there are several ways to kill a vampire. One of the things I love about Near Dark is they stripped away a lot of the classic vampire myths leaving two main myths of drink blood to survive and avoid the sun, simple and affective. Let The Right One In also did that, and it worked extremely well.

The plot is a simple one, and I think to some extent we can relate to our main character. Oskar is a twelve year old boy who is the victim of bullying. One day he meets a young girl named Eli, over time they form a close bond. Strange events start happening in the small town where they live and we soon find out why, Eli is a vampire. Through their friendship Oskar finds his courage to try and stand up to the bullying, and Eli finds someone she can trust. Yes this film centers around two young characters (Eli looks young but her true age is never revealed) but this is not a film for young teens, this is a far more adult film.

The two main actors, Kare Hedebrant as Oskar and Lina Leandersson as Eli are both amazing to watch. I believe this was both their first film, and you wouldn't know it. They both give strong and mature performances, I believed the story they were telling. They had wonderful chemistry together, you really believed this strong bond they formed. The adult characters are not really fleshed out, but this isn't really their story. There was one scene which involved cats which I thought was too comedic for this film and I would have liked to have seen that left on the cutting room floor. For the most part the adults do fine, but they simply cannot match the two leads. The bully characters were well done, as a victim of bullying at that age, I can tell you first hand, they don't know when to quit. The main bully certainly proved that, with his lackeys actually shedding tears over their actions. Whether they did that because they actually felt remorse or didn't want to get in trouble isn't clear but it is a reaction you do not often seen on film.

The look of the film is a sad one, the snowy back drop, the simple colours and the small town. It is toned down, and it works perfectly like that. There is a bit of blood, and the scenes are certainly interesting. There are things which are left up to your imagination, like who exactly was the man with Eli? But you can easily draw your own conclusions, and make them work. There is an interesting scene in the film which has to do with the vampire myth of being invited in, hence the title. I really loved that scene and how it played out. I do not want to give anymore away so if you have not seen this, do yourself a favour and DO IT NOW!

Getting it out...

Nice title eh? Well I am getting it out...and that would be this weird and disturbing story I've had in my mind, brewing for quite some time. I love writing, that is no shocker, and I finally could not take it any longer and I finally started getting this story out. Normally I would take to pen and paper but I actually started typing it up. Will anyone ever read it? I have no idea, when I am confident enough I will show it to someone. But it is something I have to write and get out, if only for myself.

As you may or may not know, I do a lot of reading. I enjoy Fiction, some of my favourite books are American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, The Name Of The Rose by Umberto Eco and Different Seasons by Stephen King to name a few. Quite a variety there, and I very much enjoy my non-fiction with True Crime leading the way. I love reading unqiue stories, things that can really challenge me, make me think, leave things open for debate. And those are the types of things I want to bring to my writing, and the story I am writing is perfect. It might possibly be the most disturbing thing I have written, it is part horror. I have worked out my beginning, middle and end, the themes I want to explore, the feelings I want to invoke. It is just a matter of getting it all out, and hopefully in the next few months I can get that done. I can see the story play out in my head, with other stories I've had brewing, they either had only a beginning and middle and no clear ending, or vice versa but with this one everything is there.

Wish me luck!

(My ramblings as posted on Empire Aus Forum 29th of June 09)

Not out till the 8th but I just got back from the Melbourne Premiere and my screening was the first in Australia to see the film!

But after seeing it, and I am sure Felicia will agree, I just had to get my thoughts out!

I thought this was actually more funny and better then Borat. Some of the stuff he managed to get away with, I am stunned! The whole movie was gold! There are moments I just could not watch because it was too much, but not in a bad way. He has this way of getting you right out of your comfort zone, and you just don't know if you should be laughing, but you do.

I don't want to go on too much about it, because I'd hate to ruin it. I'll have to write a proper review soon. I am tempted to give it a straight out 5/5
